New Exhibition: Expect the Unexpected, Tomi Ungerer as Poster Artist

Although little known in France for this aspect of his work, Tomi Ungerer is considered one of the most talented poster artists of recent decades. To mark its tenth anniversary, the Tomi Ungerer Museum is showing the extent of his talent in this field by presenting his posters and their preparatory drawings.

Inspired by the French poster artist Savignac, the young Ungerer quickly established himself in the late 1950s and 1960s in New York. His inventiveness worked wonders in extensive campaigns like those for the New York Times and for the New York radio station. In the 1970s and 1980s, he developed this activity in Germany, working for the Robert Pütz agency, for which he illustrated campaigns for Bonduelle and Nixdorf. His slogan “Expect the Unexpected”, remained a leading thread of his work as a poster artist. His poster work is marked by off-beat humour, latent satire and a surrealist spirit, creating a visual shock in the viewer irrespective of the subject. Heirs of Tomi Ungerer in this field, like Marino Degano, are included in the exhibition.

TOMI UNGERER AFFICHISTE: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

Peu connu en France pour cet aspect de son oeuvre, Tomi Ungerer est pourtant considéré comme l’un des affichistes les plus talentueux de ces dernières décennies.

Dans le cadre de ses dix ans, le musée propose de montrer l’étendue de son talent dans ce domaine en présentant des affiches et leurs dessins préparatoires. Inspiré par l’affichiste français Savignac, le jeune artiste s’est rapidement imposé dès la fin des années 1950 et dans les années 1960 à New York. Son inventivité a fait merveille dans d’imposantes campagnes comme celle pour le New York Times et pour la radio new-yorkaise.

Dans les années 1970 et 1980, il a développé cette activité en Allemagne en travaillant pour l’agence de Robert Pütz, pour laquelle il a illustré des campagnes pour Bonduelle et Nixdorf. Le slogan « Expect the Unexpected »(Attendez-vous à l’inattendu), dont il est l’auteur, est resté le fil conducteur de son oeuvre d’affichiste. Elle est en effet marquée par un humour décalé, une satire sous-jacente et un esprit surréaliste qui provoquent quel que soit le thème abordé un choc visuel auprès du spectateur. Quelques héritiers de Tomi Ungerer dans ce domaine, comme Marino Degano, sont présentés en écho.
